A journey to Mallorca’s northern horizon — filmed and shared by Amic Hotels in 2008
Before Instagram existed, before travel reels, drone films and destination influencers, Amic Hotels was already using online video to show the world why Mallorca was worth discovering.
In August 2008, we published a small article about the viewpoint at Cap de Formentor.
The text was short. The video carried the story.
It showed one of Mallorca’s defining landscapes: a narrow peninsula of mountains and cliffs reaching into the Mediterranean at the northern end of the island.
YouTube itself was only three years old. Its first video had been uploaded in April 2005, when sharing travel films online was still something new.
Amic Hotels was already there.
Already filming Mallorca.
Already sharing its landscapes.
Already encouraging travellers to leave their hotel for a day, cross the island and discover what waited beyond Palma.

The image quality belongs to another era. There are no aerial shots, cinematic transitions or carefully staged travel scenes.
What the film has is something harder to recreate: authenticity.
It records a real journey to Cap de Formentor at a moment when very few hotels were creating their own destination videos.
Today we would call it travel content, destination storytelling or digital tourism marketing.
In 2008, we simply wanted people to see Mallorca.
Where is Cap de Formentor?
Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point of Mallorca, located on the Formentor Peninsula in the municipality of Pollença.
It forms the dramatic northern end of the Serra de Tramuntana, where the mountains meet the open Mediterranean. The peninsula lies approximately 54 kilometres from Palma and is reached from Port de Pollença along the winding Ma-2210 road.
For travellers staying in Palma de Mallorca, Cap de Formentor is one of the island’s most memorable full-day excursions.
The journey connects several very different versions of Mallorca:
The streets and waterfront of Palma.
The rural centre of the island.
The historic town of Pollença.
The seafront atmosphere of Port de Pollença.
The pine trees of Formentor Beach.
The cliffs of Mirador Es Colomer.
The wild landscape surrounding Formentor Lighthouse.
This is why Cap de Formentor cannot be understood as a single viewpoint.
The entire road is part of the experience.
Why is Cap de Formentor so special?
Cap de Formentor feels like Mallorca gradually running out of land.
The mountains become narrower. The road rises above the sea. Pine woods give way to exposed rock. The coastline breaks into cliffs, small coves and steep ridges.
From different points along the peninsula, you can see the Bay of Pollença, the Bay of Alcúdia, the islet of El Colomer, Cala Figuera, Cala Murta and the open Mediterranean.
The landscape also explains part of Mallorca’s geological history.
The cliffs are largely formed from hard Lower Jurassic limestone dating back approximately 175 to 201 million years. These rocks were later folded and displaced during the geological processes that created the Serra de Tramuntana.
Formentor is beautiful because it is dramatic.
Its vertical cliffs, exposed ridges and intense blue water create one of the most recognisable landscapes in the Balearic Islands.
Mirador Es Colomer: the famous Cap de Formentor viewpoint
For many visitors, Mirador Es Colomer is the essential stop.
It is also known as Mirador del Mal Pas or Mirador de sa Creueta. From the viewing platform, the land falls sharply towards the Mediterranean and the islet of El Colomer rises from the water.
A stepped pedestrian path leads towards several observation points. Each section changes the angle slightly, revealing more of the cliffs and northern coastline.
This is one of the most photographed places in Mallorca, but the view still has an effect that photographs struggle to reproduce.
The scale is different when you are standing there.
The sound of the wind is stronger.
The cliffs feel higher.
The sea seems considerably larger.
The official Mallorca tourism information recommends stopping at Mirador de sa Creueta on the road towards Formentor Beach because of its views over the peninsula’s vertical cliffs.
If you only have time for one viewpoint at Cap de Formentor, Mirador Es Colomer is the most accessible and recognisable choice.
The viewpoints along the Formentor Peninsula
Mirador Es Colomer may be the most famous, but it is not the only place from which to understand the peninsula.

Mirador Es Colomer
The classic panoramic viewpoint over the cliffs and El Colomer islet.
Mirador de Punta d’en Tomàs
A different perspective over the limestone formations and the abrupt northern coast.
The viewpoint near Formentor Lighthouse
The final landscape at the end of the peninsula, where the mountains meet the open sea.
The Balearic Government’s geological guide identifies these three viewpoints as especially useful for understanding the cliffs and formation of Cap de Formentor.
The best approach is not to rush from one photograph to the next.
Stop.
Look in both directions.
Notice how the colour of the water changes beside the cliffs.
Listen to the wind.
Formentor deserves time.
Formentor Lighthouse: the end of the road
At the far end of the peninsula stands Far de Formentor, or Formentor Lighthouse.
The lighthouse entered service on 30 April 1863, when reaching this isolated point was considerably more difficult than it is today.
It remains one of Mallorca’s great maritime landmarks.
The attraction lies in the entire setting: the winding road, the mountains, the sea and the feeling of having reached the physical end of the island.
From Palma, Formentor Lighthouse appears distant.
From the terrace of Hotel Amic Horizonte, we watch ferries and cruise ships enter the Port of Palma every day. At Formentor, the relationship with the Mediterranean changes completely. The city disappears and the open sea takes over.
These are two different horizons on the same island.
Formentor Beach: pine trees beside transparent water
A visit to the peninsula can also include Formentor Beach, traditionally known as Cala Pi de sa Posada.
This long, narrow beach is surrounded by pine trees, some growing almost at the water’s edge. Its sheltered position creates a very different atmosphere from the exposed cliffs and windy viewpoints.
The official Balearic tourism website describes it as one of Mallorca’s mythical Mediterranean settings. During the summer, it can also be reached by boat from Port de Pollença or Port d’Alcúdia.
Formentor Beach can be combined with the viewpoints, but allow enough time. The road is winding, traffic can be slow and parking is limited.
The pleasure of the excursion comes from the landscape rather than the number of stops completed.
Can you drive to Cap de Formentor in 2026?
Seasonal traffic restrictions protect the peninsula and reduce congestion on the Ma-2210 road.
In 2026, restrictions apply from 15 May to 18 October, between 10:00 and 22:00.
During these hours, access to the lighthouse section is restricted to authorised vehicles, public transport, cyclists, pedestrians and specific exempt categories. Private vehicles without authorisation cannot continue through the restricted section.
Access rules can change every year.

How to reach Cap de Formentor by bus
During the restricted period, public transport is the most practical way to explore the peninsula.
TIB bus line 334 connects:
Alcúdia.
Port de Pollença.
Mirador Es Colomer.
Formentor Beach.
Cala Figuera and Cala Murta.
Formentor Lighthouse.
The official access plan identifies stops at the main viewpoint, beach, coves and lighthouse, allowing visitors to experience several parts of the peninsula without taking a private vehicle into the restricted area.
Services and timetables may change, so check the current schedule before leaving Palma.
When is the best time to visit Cap de Formentor?
Each part of the day offers a different experience.
Early morning
The roads and viewpoints are generally quieter, temperatures are cooler and the light is well suited to landscape photography.
Late afternoon
The lower Mediterranean light adds warmer colours to the cliffs and creates long shadows across the mountains.
Outside the main summer season
Spring, autumn and winter reveal a quieter Formentor. The landscape feels more open and the journey can be easier, although weather and wind conditions should always be considered.
Summer brings intense blue water and long hours of daylight, together with greater demand, traffic regulation and more visitors.
There is no single perfect month.
There is, however, one rule that always helps: do not plan Formentor in a hurry.
